BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss' Savante' Stringfellow was named Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week Tuesday, as announced by the league office.
Stringfellow, a senior from Jackson, Miss., recorded the longest indoor long jump in the world in 2001, last weekend at the Gator Invitational with his 27-0 leap. Stringfellow, the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Long Jump Champion, set a new Gator Invitational record, personal record and a new Ole Miss record with his winning leap. He also automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Stringfellow's jump has already bested last season's SEC indoor standard, which was 26-10 by Arkansas' Melvin Lister.
"Savante's performance was one of the most outstanding I have seen in 32 years of coaching," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "It was a regular season meet at a jump facility that is difficult and he produced the world leading mark. Everyone was wanting to know how he would do indoor after the Olympics and I think he answered them well."
The Ole Miss men's track team moved up a spot in the most recent Trackwire Online poll to No. 15. The Ole Miss women's squad fell in the poll from 11th to 16th. Both teams will be competing this weekend at the Canon IV Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. The meet will be hosted by Butler University.
