Ole Miss Softball Holds Off Sacramento State, 2-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Ole Miss softball team defeated Sacramento State, 2-1, Saturday to advance to the second round of the consolation bracket at the Capital Classic.
Ole Miss (13-15) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jennifer Poore doubled home Amanda Lehotak. Poore, a freshman catcher from San Diego, was 3-for-3 in the game.
The Rebels added another run in the fourth when a Lindsay Price groundball was bobbled by the third baseman, allowing Desiree Layman to score.
Price (4-5) also picked up the win on the mound, allowing five hits and one run over 6.1 innings. Jennifer Hughes finished the game for her third career save.
For the host Hornets (9-14), Nicole Deatherage went the distance in the loss, dropping her to 5-8 on the year. Cathy Coupar was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
The Rebels fell into the consolation bracket after losing to Iowa, 4-3, in the first round of the tournament earlier in the day. Down 2-0 in the fourth, Ole Miss responded with three runs. Jamie Cummings scored on an RBI-double from Layman, and then Jessica Hamilton reached home when Tina Sclafani's flyball was dropped in left field. Lehotak, who batted 2-for-4, put the Rebels ahead on an RBI-single.
However, the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes (17-6), who defeated the Rebels 10-0 on Friday, answered with Alicia Gerlach, who tied the game with a fifth-inning solo home run and gave Iowa the lead with another solo shot in the top of the seventh.
Kristi Hanks (12-3) allowed five hits with six strikeouts in the win. Hughes (7-4) took only the second loss in her last nine starts.
Ole Miss faces San Jose State in the second round of the consolation bracket, Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT). The Spartans got past the Rebels, 2-1 in nine innings, Thursday in the first day of the Capital Classic.
