Rebel Softball Downs Texas Tech on Hughes Shutout

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jennifer Hughes tossed her fifth shutout of the year as the Ole Miss softball team knocked off Texas Tech, 1-0, in day two of the Capital Classic. The Rebels (12-14) fell to BYU and Iowa in their other two games Friday, and drop to 1-3 in the Classic.
After seeing her school-record six-game winning streak end on Thursday, Hughes (7-3) bounced back against Texas Tech (18-10) with her seventh career shutout, limiting the Red Raiders to six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Ole Miss picked up its lone run in the fifth, when Jennifer Poore singled home pinch-runner Jenny Cox from third base with two outs in the inning. Red Raider Amanda Renfro (17-8), who no-hit the Rebels a year ago, suffered the loss despite holding Ole Miss to six hits and no earned runs.
In the early game, BYU starter Maryon DeWitt (6-9) allowed only four Rebel singles in a 6-0 win over Ole Miss. Oli Keohohou and Becca Erickson each hit two-run homers for the Cougars (13-15).
Jessica Hamilton batted 2-for-2 to lead the Rebels. Hurler Lindsay Price dropped to 3-5 with the loss.
The late game saw 12th-ranked Iowa (16-6) hand Ole Miss a 10-0 rout. Kristi Hanks (11-3) allowed only one Rebel hit over the mercy-ruled five-inning affair, while three different Hawkeyes homered. Holly Burris (1-4) suffered the loss for Ole Miss.
Tournament play begins Saturday at the Capital Classic. The Rebels face a rematch with Iowa in the first round, Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT).
