Ole Miss Travels To Kentucky

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team makes a return to Southeastern Conference play this weekend, traveling to Lexington to play the Kentucky Wildcats. Ole Miss and UK play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. (CT), and the finale of the threegame set is Sunday at noon.

The Rebels (14-17, 1-2 SEC) recently ended a stretch of nine games in seven days, splitting a home doubleheader with Southeast Missouri and going 25 at the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.

Against Southeast Missouri on Wednesday, Ole Miss dropped game one, 42, but rebounded to take game two, 80. Jennifer Poore hit 4 for 7 with three RBI in the twin bill. The freshman from San Diego leads the Rebels this season with a .355 average and 17 RBI.

The second game of the SEMO doubleheader saw Ole Miss record their biggest offensive inning of the year with six runs in the fourth. Jamie Cummings and Jessica Hamilton each collected a pair of singles as Ole Miss outhit Southeast 123.

Holly Burris tossed her fifth career shutout and first of the 2001 season in limiting the Otahkians to three hits over five innings. Burris also stole home in a fifthinning double steal to end the game on the eightrun mercy rule.

Kentucky (15-17, 2-5 SEC) enters the weekend having dropped four of its last five games. The Wildcats were swept, 3-0, by Florida last weekend, and split a doubleheader with Tennessee on Wednesday.

UK boasts a team batting average of .279 with three batters over .300. Senior outfielder Leslie Kwiatkowski is hitting at a .356 clip with 11 doubles and 16 RBI, while junior shortstop Angie Dal Pozzo is among the league leaders in runs driven in with 25 to go along with a .344 average and four homers.

The Rebels lead the alltime series with the Cats, 91, and are 40 in Lexington. The schools split their doubleheader last year in Oxford, with Kentucky taking game one, 21, and Ole Miss winning game two, 31. Jennifer Hughes struck out 10 batters in the game two victory, and Mandy Shklar went 4for5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored in the doubleheader.

Ole Miss is 23 on the road this season, while Kentucky is 75 at home.
