OXFORD, Miss. - No. 19 Ole Miss rallied for six runs in the eighth inning, including three with two outs, to rally for an 8-7 win over Alabama Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels also won Friday's series-opener 6-3.
Ole Miss (20-6-1, 6-2 SEC) sent 11 batters to the plate during the six-run eighth. The Rebels cut the lead to 7-4 on a RBI single by Burney Hutchinson and a RBI ground out by Banks Robinson. After Carl Lafferty drew a two-out walk to load the bases, an error by third baseman Adam Pavkovich off the bat of Chad Sterbens allowed a run to score and extend the Ole Miss inning. Glen Morris followed with a bases loaded walk to score Josh Christian and make the score 7-6.
Kavonski Chatman then came on in relief for starter Lance Cormier and was greeted by a Matt Tolbert two-run single into right to put the Rebels up 8-7.
Alabama (17-9, 4-4 SEC) threatened in the top of the ninth. Brent Boyd hit a two-out single and Aaron Clark followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Freshman right-hander Nick Bradshaw, however, managed to escape with the win as he coaxed Beau Hearod to ground out to second.
Bradshaw (2-0) pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief for starter Mike Gray to earn the win. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out one.
Cormier (4-4) was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs, though only four earned, on nine hits and three walks. He also struck out five.
Tolbert and Hutchinson both went 3-for-5 and had two RBI each. Hutchinson hit his seventh home run of the year with a two-out solo shot in the sixth to cut the Alabama lead to 6-2.
Josh Christian also homered for Ole Miss, hitting a solo shot to lead-off the fifth.
Alabama jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings. Hearod had a three-run double to cap a five-run third, and the Crimson Tide added another run in the fourth with a RBI double from Casey Lambert.
Boyd went 3-for-5 to lead Alabama at the plate as the Crimson Tide out-hit the Rebels 13-11.
The two teams will conclude the three-game SEC series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
