KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 31st-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 4 Tennessee Sunday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The match was moved indoors due to chilly temperatures.
Tennessee (17-2, 6-1 SEC) got on the board first, taking the doubles point with wins at all three positions. At No. 1 doubles, Julie DeRoo and Mira Radu, ranked No. 31 in the nation, were upset by Kim Gates and Vilmarie Castellvi in a hard-fought tiebreaker, 9-8(3). The Lady Rebels have only won one time when losing the doubles point.
In singles, 31st-ranked DeRoo quickly evened the score by downing Lady Vol Alison Ojeda 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot. DeRoo has won three in a row and four of her last five matches. Tennessee's Castellvi dominated Radu 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to make it 2-1.
Freshman Karem Harboe lost to Agnes Wiski 6-0, 7-6(1) as the Lady Vols went up 3-1, and then Tennessee clinched the win, when Gates held off Lady Rebel Hanna-Katri Aalto 6-4, 7-6(4) at No. 2 singles.
The Lady Rebels return to action Saturday, April 7 as they host LSU at 1:00 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
