OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team defeated Auburn, 3-2, Sunday to salvage the finale of the three-game home series. The win ends a seven-game losing skid for the Rebels (16-24, 3-9 SEC).
Ole Miss posted all three runs in the third inning. The Rebels used leadoff singles by Kristi DiMarco and Desiree Layman, who each collected two hits in the game, and a pair of two-out AU fielding errors to take a 3-1 lead.
Auburn (21-15, 4-5 SEC) narrowed the gap to one in the fourth inning with Mary Petrie singling home Ashley Moore, who was 2-for-4 to extend her hit streak to 22 games.
However, senior Jennifer Hughes (7-9) would make the lead stand, tossing four scoreless innings in relief of starter Holly Burris for the win. Hughes held the Tigers to three hits over the final four to end her six-game losing streak.
Auburn starter Jennifer Lofton, who left in the third inning with discomfort, took the loss despite allowing three hits and no earned runs.
Ole Miss closes out its eight-game homestand Wednesday, hosting Southern Miss in a non-conference doubleheader. The twin bill will start at 5 p.m. (CT).
