OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team fell to Auburn Saturday, 4-0 and 13-7, in a seven-hour, 45-minute home doubleheader. The twin bill featured a 1:33 rain delay and a 10-inning, four-hour second game that ended at 12:40 a.m. (CST).
Holly Burris hit 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the Rebels (15-24, 2-9 SEC) in game two. Down 4-0 in the first inning, the sophomore from Germantown, Tenn., doubled home Amanda Lehotak to open a three-run rally. Burris tied the game with an RBI-sacrifice fly in the second inning and gave the Rebels the lead with her first career home run in the fifth.
After knotting the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth, Auburn (21-14, 4-4 SEC) walked in two Ole Miss runs in the bottom of the inning to again fall behind. However, the Tigers would take advantage of two Rebel errors in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7 and send it to extra frames.
The game remained scoreless until the 10th when Auburn tallied six runs, highlighted by a pair of two-run triples by Ashley Moore and Mary Petrie. Moore picked up two hits to extend her hitting streak to 21 games.
Jamie Cummings notched three hits in the game, while Phyllis Manley and Jennifer Poore each had two to help the Rebels outhit the Tigers 14-13. However, Ole Miss was hurt by 15 runners left on base and seven errors, both single-game school records.
Burris (2-7) suffered the loss, tossing 3.2 innings in relief of Lindsay Price. Lily DuBois (6-1) limited the Rebels to four hits and two unearned runs over the final six for the win.
AU hurler Jennifer Lofton (8-6) tossed her first career no-hitter in game one. Lofton allowed only one base runner - a Poore seventh-inning walk - in the shutout. Ole Miss starter Jennifer Hughes (7-9) surrendered five hits in the loss.
Auburn scored all four of its runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. An in-the-park home run by Petrie, hit during an intentional walk, and a two-run homer by Deni Zeigler would supply the Tigers' offense. Precipitation and lightning followed Zeigler's long ball to evoke the weather delay.
The finale of the three-game series is set for 1 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday.
