TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss softball team suffered a pair of shutouts Saturday in dropping a doubleheader at Alabama, 3-0 and 6-0, at UA Softball Complex. The finale of the three-game set is Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
In game two, the sixth-ranked Crimson Tide (37-5, 16-4 SEC) used three hits and a pair of Rebel errors to take an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Kelly Kretschman and Kelley Askew each drove in a run in the rally. UA plated three more in the sixth on a two-run double by Lacy Prejean and an RBI-single by Jennifer Reach.
Freshman Jennifer Poore batted 3-for-3 as Ole Miss (17-30, 4-13 SEC) collected six hits off Melissa Bautista (5-0). Holly Burris fell to 2-10 with the complete-game loss.
In the first game, UA hurler Shelley Laird (23-2) held Ole Miss hitless through seven and finished with a one-hit shutout. Poore opened the seventh inning with a single up the middle to break-up Laird's no-hit bid.
The Tide picked up all three runs in the first inning, with two coming home on a Ginger Jones' single to center field. Jennifer Hughes (9-11) would shut out Alabama the rest of the way and allow only five hits in the loss.
