OXFORD, Miss. - In her final home start, Ole Miss pitcher Jennifer Hughes tossed a complete-game shutout of Georgia, 5-0, Sunday on the Rebels' Senior Day. The win gave the Ole Miss softball team (18-36, 5-19 SEC) a salvage of its final home series of the 2001 season.
A senior from Missouri City, Texas, Hughes (10-12) limited the Bulldogs to four hits with eight strikeouts in her seventh shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. The victory lowered her career ERA to 1.91, which is easily the lowest in school history.
Ole Miss exploded in the first inning with its first five batters all scoring before UGA starter Nicole Urban (11-7) could record an out. Holly Burris opened the barrage with a two-run single, and Kristi DiMarco followed with an RBI-double. Jessica Hamilton drove home two more with her single to right field.
DiMarco, a junior from Palmdale, Calif., hit 4-for-8 to lead the Rebels in the three-game set, while Burris, a sophomore from Germantown, Tenn., went 4-for-9 with a homer and three RBI.
Nicole Barber batted 2-for-3 to lead Georgia (27-25, 7-17 SEC) at the plate. Barber finished the series hitting .500 (5-for-10) with a double and triple.
Along with Hughes, other seniors honored at Sunday's game included Jamie Cummings, Rachel Davenport, Mackenzie Emel and Tina Sclafani.
Ole Miss is undefeated in its final Sunday games at home this season at 5-0.
The Rebels close out Southeastern Conference play next weekend against No. 5 LSU in Baton Rouge. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. (CT), and Sunday's finale is set for noon.
