NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 10 Ole Miss survived a late Vanderbilt rally for a 9-8 win, Saturday evening at Charles Hawkins Field at the McGugin Center, to remain in a first-place tie with LSU for the overall Southeastern Conference lead. The Rebels (34-13-1, 16-7 SEC) also won Friday's series-opener 17-6 and have won seven straight overall.
With Ole Miss leading 9-2 in the seventh, first baseman Sean Luellwitz hit a three-run double that went off the glove of center fielder Kris Cox, while attempting to make an over-the-shoulder catch, and trim the Rebels' lead to 9-5.
Cox, however, may have the saved the game for the Rebels in the ninth, robbing Ulises Cabrera-Valenzuela of a possible double with a diving catch in left. Cox's catch kept the tying run off base as Karl Nonemaker reached on a bunt single and Luellwitz singled to put runners on first and second.
John Kaye then followed with a three-run home run to right to pull with Commodores within 9-8.
Junior right-hander Glen Morris then came on to retire the next two batters and record his seventh save of the season.
Dan McShea (3-4) pitched into the seventh inning to earn the win. He allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks, while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
"Dan gave us another great start," said first-year head coach Mike Bianco. "He gave a very gutsy performance as he had some misfortune in giving up some runs tonight. A couple of the hits he gave up came with two strikes on the hitter, and then we take him out of the game and Luellwitz hits the double to allow his runs to score."
Junior first baseman Banks Robinson recorded his first career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with a career-high three RBIs as Ole Miss out-hit Vanderbilt 15-13. In the two games this weekend, the Rebels have scored 26 runs on 34 hits.
Nonemaker went 3-for-4 for the Commodores (21-25, 7-16 SEC).
Vanderbilt starter Jeff Little (5-7) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and three walks.
Ole Miss will look to record its fourth SEC sweep this season when the two teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Junior left-hander Mike Gray (3-1, 5.31) will start for Ole Miss against junior right-hander Steven Faulkner (4-3, 6.39).
