Tennessee Hands Men's Tennis 5-2 Loss

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 7 ranked Tennessee Volunteers handed the 11th-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team a 5-2 loss Friday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The Rebels will host Florida Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Tennessee (13-4, 6-2) claimed the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. The Vols won the No. 3 doubles and then James Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg defeated Tennessee's Paul Podbury and Mario Toledo 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Mark Parsons and Adam Carey finished off the Rebel duo of Alex Hartman and Patrick Chucri 8-4 to take the point.
Coming into the match, the Rebels were 2-3 when losing the doubles point and 11-1 when claiming the point. Tennessee jumped on the Rebels early in singles and never let up winning five first sets.
Stahlberg, making his debut at No. 1 singles, suffered his first dual match loss of the season as he dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to 46th-ranked Parsons. Stahlberg, ranked No. 32 in the nation, is now 16-1 overall in dual matches. The Rebels fell behind 3-0 when Tennessee's Podbury beat Martin Selin 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Tennessee clinched the win when Simon Rea topped Rebel Chucri 6-3, 6-4 on court six. Ole Miss picked up their first point of the day, after Paul Ciorascu's opponent, Toledo, retired down 7-6(6), 5-1.
Hartman, No. 10 in the latest rankings, lost a tough match to 38th-ranked Handoyo 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to make it 5-1 Volunteers. Shortall, ranked 44th in the country, came back to beat 66th-ranked Carey 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the final score.
