Ole Miss-Florida Split Softball Doubleheader

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Jennifer Hughes tossed a four-hit shutout in helping the Ole Miss softball team earn a doubleheader split with Florida Saturday, winning game one 2-0 and falling in game two 4-3.
It was the eighth career shutout and sixth of the 2001 season for Hughes (9-9), a senior from Missouri City, Texas. Seven of the Rebels' (17-27, 4-10 SEC) last nine wins have been shutouts.
Amanda Lehotak hit 2-for-2 and scored both Ole Miss runs in the first game. The sophomore shortstop reached home in the first inning on a Kristi DiMarco sacrifice fly to right field and scored again in the third off a Holly Burris RBI-single up the middle.
Rebel catcher Jennifer Poore collected two singles and threw out a pair of potential base stealers. The freshman has five runners caught-stealing in her last two starts.
In game two, Florida (30-17, 10-10 SEC) jumped up 3-0 in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch, a Rebel fielding error and a Mylin Prieto RBI-ground ball. Ole Miss responded in the fifth with three straight run-scoring hits from Jamie Cummings, Lehotak and Poore to tie the game at 3-3. Cummings was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI in the game.
Walden would score the game-winner for the Gators in the sixth off an Ashley Boone sacrifice fly to right field. Renise Landry (15-9), who suffered the loss in game one, picked up the win in the late game, tossing two scoreless innings of relief.
Holly Burris (2-9) allowed three hits and three runs, though only one earned, over the final three innings in the loss. Starter Lindsay Price limited UF to three hits and one run before exiting in the fourth.
The rubber match of the three-game series is Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT), and will be televised on the Sunshine Network.
