REBEL SEC TOURNEY NOTES: Ole Miss is making its eighth appearance in the Southeastern Conference Tournament since the event started in 1977 ... The Rebels missed qualifying for last year's tournament, finishing a half-game behind Kentucky for the eighth and final spot ... The Rebels are 10-14 (.417 winning percentage) all-time in the SEC Tournament, including 3-2 versus Florida ... The last time the Rebels and Gators met in the SEC Tournament was in 1982 in Gainesville, Fla., with Florida winning 8-7 ... Ole Miss and Florida met three times in the 1977 SEC Tournament in Oxford. After the Gators defeated the Rebels 5-4 to send them into the loser's bracket, Ole Miss rebounded to beat the Gators twice, 7-6 and 7-4, for its first and only SEC Tournament championship ... the Rebels are 6-6 in elimination games in the SEC Tournament ... Ole Miss has not won two games in the tournament since 1977, when the Rebels went 4-1 en route to their only tournament championship.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD: Ole Miss has been on both sides of a game called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule in this tournament. After opening the tourney with a 17-6 rout of Tennessee on Wednesday, the Rebels were 10-runed by LSU yesterday, 13-2. The 17 runs scored represented the most by an Ole Miss team in the postseason (SEC Tournament, NCAA Tournament or College World Series), and the 11-run margin of victory was Ole Miss' largest ever in the SEC Tournament. While yesterday's 13 runs scored by LSU was the second-most allowed by an Ole Miss team in the SEC Tournament, behind the 21 scored by Vanderbilt in a 21-0 win during the 1980 SEC Tournament. The 11-run defeat was also the Rebels' second worse defeat in SEC Tournament play, behind the 21-0 loss to the Commodores in 1980.

REBELS TURN TRIPLE PLAY: Ole Miss turned its first triple play since May 29, 1999 against Monmouth (NJ) in the NCAA Regionals during the sixth inning of yesterday's game with LSU. With runners on first and second, senior 3B Lance Jones snagged a line drive off the bat of Wally Pontiff. He then stepped on third to double off David Raymer before firing over to first to beat Ryan Theriot back to the bag.

LAST TIME OUT: LSU's first six batters of the game reached base safely with Mike Fontenot and Zeph Zinsman both hitting three-run home runs to ignite the Tigers to a 1-2 win over Ole Miss, in a game called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Lane Mestepey allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk, while striking out four to earn the win. Adam Yates (7-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks in just an inning. All nine Tiger starters recorded a hit as they out-hit the Rebels 13-4.

SCOUTING THE GATORS: Florida enters this afternoon's game with a 34-24 record. LSU blanked the Gators 10-0 on Wednesday in a seven-inning contest, and then Florida defeated Tennessee 9-3 in an elimination game yesterday. The Gators are hitting .313 as a team, with six regulars batting over .300. Senior Jason Dill is leading the team with a .380 (41x106) average. Junior OF Matt Goss is second on the team with a .356 (69x194) average, and leads the team in both HRs (11) and RBIs (53). Florida pitchers have a team ERA of 6.10 and opponents are hitting .292 against them with 61 HRs.

SERIES INFO: Today's meeting is the 59th all-time between Ole Miss and Florida ... the Gators lead the series 32-26 ... the Rebels have won nine of the last 10 meetings dating back to 1998, including a three-game sweep of this season's SEC series in Oxford, Apr. 20-22 ... the sweep marked Ole Miss' third straight SEC series victory over Florida ... Ole Miss is 18-13 all-time against Florida in Oxford, and is 8-19 in Gainesville ... Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco is 3-0 versus Florida ... Florida head coach Andy Lopez is 8-10 against the Rebels.

REVIEWING THE 2001 FLORIDA SERIES: Ole Miss recorded a sweep of the Gators, Apr. 20-22 in Oxford, winning by scores of 9-1, 12-9 and 4-0. Ole Miss hit .305 (30x97) as a team in the series, led by Burney Hutchinson, who went 4x9 (.444) with a HR and four RBIs. The Gators batted .243 (25x103) led by Matt Goss, who was 6x14 (.429) with a RBI. Junior RHP Pete Montrenes fired a complete-game two hitter and the Rebels scored nine runs in their final two at-bats to take the series-opener. In game two, Ole Miss scored eight runs in the sixth to erase a 5-0 deficit, and after Florida tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh, the Rebels scored a run in the bottom of the inning and tacked on three more in the eighth for the 12-9 victory. In the series-finale, Mike Gray and Nick Bradshaw combined on a seven-hit shutout.

IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss enters this afternoon's game ranked No. 23 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30. It is the ninth straight week that the Rebels have been ranked in one of the three major college baseball polls ... Florida is unranked.

REBEL DIAMOND NOTES: With four hits yesterday, Ole Miss surpassed the 600-hit mark for the second time in the past six years ... The Rebels are 5-11 (.313 winning percentage) the last two seasons during the month of May ... The Rebels' 49 home runs this season is their lowest total since hitting only 27 in 1996. Ole Miss has hit at least 60 HRs in three of the last four seasons ... A win today would tie the 1986 team for the second-most wins in school history at 38. The record is 40 set in 1995.
