Men's Golf Drops To 12th

WILLIAMSBURG,Va. - After finishing the opening day of the 2001 NCAA East Regional tied for eighth place, the Ole Miss men's golf team finds itself in 12th place Friday after the second round. The Rebels have a 36-hole total of 285-291--576.

Ole Miss' Phil Caravia led the way for the Rebels with a career-tying round of 68 for a 36-hole total of 73-68--141 and is tied for 17th place. The senior from Belleville, Ill., eagled the 18th hole en route to his round of 68. Troy Muller is tied for 29th place with a two-day total of 69-73--142. Andrew Medley fired a second round 73 and is tied for 42nd place with a 70-73--143. J.J. Thompson has a 36-hole total of 73-77--150 and is tied for 88th place, while Tommy Clement fired a second round 78 and is tied for 105th position with a 74-78--152.

"Phil (Caravia) played very well for us today," said Ole Miss coach Woody Cowart. "His solid play is keeping us in the hunt right now. We know that we will have to play better on Saturday in order for us to advance to the NCAA Championships."

East Tennessee State continues to lead after the second round of play. The Buccaneers have a 36-hole total of 274-278--552. North Carolina State trails ETSU by three strokes after firing a two-day total of 281-274--555.

Florida's Camilo Villegas continues to lead individually with a two-day total of 64- 70--134. North Carolina State's Chris Mundorf trails Villegas by two strokes with a 68-68--136.

The top 10 teams from each of the three regions (East, Central, and West) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Durham, N.C., May 30-June 3. The two lowest scoring individuals in each regional, whose team does not advance, will also compete in the championships.

Final round play is scheduled for Saturday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course.
