Ole Miss Stays Alive With 10-2 Victory Over Southern University
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior right-hander Ronnie Goodwin carried a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning and junior right fielder Burney Hutchinson hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead Ole Miss to a 10-2 win over Southern University-Baton Rouge Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the 2001 New Orleans Regional, played at Turchin Stadium on the Tulane University campus.
Ole Miss (39-22-1) will now face the Oklahoma State-Tulane loser tonight at 7:30 p.m., in another elimination game. The Cowboys (41-20) and Green Wave (51-10) are scheduled to play this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
The Jaguars end their season at 43-12.
Southern picked up two unearned runs on two hits in the bottom of the ninth as Goodwin (5-2) finished with a complete-game, three-hitter, while striking out seven to earn the win.
Hutchinson finished 2-for-4 at the plate and tied a career-high with four RBIs. The home runs were his 13th and 14th of the season, and it was his third career multi-home run game.
His first home run highlighted a four-run first inning as Ole Miss took a 4-0 lead after the first. Hutchinson's second homer of the afternoon came in the fourth to make it 7-0.
Josh Christian went 2-for-5 and hit his 13th home run of the year, a solo shot in the second to extend the Rebels' lead to 5-0.
Ole Miss out-hit Southern 9-3 on the afternoon.
Jaguar starter Erik Thomas (8-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on five and four walks in four innings. He also struck out six.
