NEW ORLEANS, La. - Paul Powell's two-out double in the top of the 10th inning to score Jose Virgil lifted Oklahoma State to a 5-4 win over Ole Miss in the opening game of the 2001 NCAA Baseball New Orleans Regional, Friday afternoon in front of 3,113 at Turchin Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.

With the loss, Ole Miss (38-22-1) will play the loser of Friday night's Tulane-Southern Univ., game scheduled for 7:30 p.m., in an elimination game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Oklahoma State (41-20) will play the winner of the game between the No. 1 seed Green Wave (50-10) and No. 4 seed Jaguars (43-10) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Virgil drew a one-out walk from Nick Bradshaw in the 10th and after Brad Bouris flew out to center, Virgil advanced to second on a wild pitch from reliever Glen Morris. That set-up Powell's double to left to score the game-winning run.

The Rebels ended the game with runners on second and third, as Daniel Rew struck out Craig Nugen to end the game and record his second save of the season.

Powell finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Cowboys out-hit the Rebels 9-8. His sac fly in the eighth broke a 3-3 tie after the Rebels had rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ole Miss would scratch out a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Clint Farrar singled to start the inning before being lifted for pinch-runner Thomas Carter. After Chad Sterbens' sac bunt advanced Carter to second, Oklahoma State pulled a double switch, bringing left-handed pitcher Shane Hawk in to pitch to Burney Hutchinson, while moving pitcher Joe Weaver to first.

Hawk struck out Hutchinson for the second out of the inning, and the Cowboys once again pulled a double switch, bringing Weaver back onto the mound from first base.

Weaver worked to a 2-2 count on Josh Christian, who then lined a double into center to score Carter and tie the game at 4-4.

Weaver (8-0) pitched a total of two innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed one run on three hits and walked none, while striking out three.

Bradshaw (4-2) was charged with loss, allowing a run on no hits and one walk in 1 2/3 innings.

Oklahoma State starter Nick McCurdy pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks. He also struck out four.

Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes went 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out nine to become the fourth player in Ole Miss history to record 100 strikeouts in a season.

Burney Hutchinson and Banks Robinson led the Rebels at the plate, recording two hits each.

Jake Bollig and Luke Scott homered in the game for the Cowboys during a three-run second inning. Bollig's was a solo shot to lead-off the second to tie the game at 1-1. Powell then tripled off the left field wall and Scott followed with his 18th home run of the year to put the Cowboys up 3-1.
