DURHAM, N.C. - The Ole Miss men's golf team shot a second-round 296 Thursday to miss the cut for the finals of the NCAA Championships by two strokes. The Rebels finish the two rounds with a 296-296--592 to tie for 18th, only six strokes out of the top 10. The top 15 teams advance to Friday's and Saturday's final rounds.
Junior J.J. Thompson and senior Troy Muller each carded a day-two 73 to pace Ole Miss. Thompson and sophomore Andrew Medley tied for 49th, each finishing with a three-over-par 147.
Muller closed out with a 149, while fellow senior Phil Caravia fired a 74-76-150. Junior Tommy Clement totaled a 75-76-151.
The NCAA Championships marked only the second time this season Ole Miss finished outside the top 10. It also signified the Rebels' fourth appearance in the Championships and the program's second in three years. Ole Miss' only better national finish came in 1985, when the team finished fourth in the NCAA.
"It was a great year," said Ole Miss head coach Woody Cowart. "Finishing top five in the SEC and 18th in the country, that's a fine season. You have to be happy with that. We just need to regroup and try to do even better next year."
Paced by individual leader Ricky Barnes with a 68-65-133, Arizona remains atop the team standings after the second round with a seven-under-par 569. Florida ranks second after the cut, followed by Wake Forest, Augusta State and Georgia.
