EUGENE, Ore. - Ole Miss senior Savante' Stringfellow won his first US Championship in the long jump Friday at the GMC Envoy USA Track and Field Championships. Stringfellow leaped 27-9.25 to claim his second-straight title at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. He won the NCAA long jump title there just a few weeks ago.
"This is a great win for me," said Stringfellow. "I had a lot of confidence coming into the meet after doing well at the NCAA meet. It was great to go against the best in the country and come out on top."
Stringfellow's winning leap was a career best, as was his second best jump of the competition (27-8). His previous career best was 27-6.75. By winning the long jump title, he will represent Team USA at the 2001 IAAF World Outdoor Championships, August 3-12 in Edmonton, Canada. The top three finishers in each event who have met IAAF qualifying standards will make the U.S. squad for Edmonton.
Fellow Ole Miss senior Teneeshia Jones competed in Friday's women's 100-meter dash semifinal. Jones ran 11.55 and missed qualifying for the finals.
