OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football newcomers went through their first collegiate practices Monday, and Rebel Head Coach David Cutcliffe was pleased with what the group accomplished during its first day of non-contact workouts.

"They looked good as a group, and they are very athletic," said Cutcliffe, who enters his third full season at the helm of the Ole Miss program in 2001. "We split the group up so that they could get a lot of reps, and that allowed us to get a lot of work done in a short period of time.

"The weather was good to us today. The coaches put these players through a good workout today, and I feel good about what they got done."

Working in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, the signee class of 2001 used the opening day of practice to focus on individual skills. The players were split up into offensive and defensive groups in both practice sessions, as both units worked on drills.

The newcomers will go through their second day of non-contact workouts tomorrow, while the Rebel upperclassmen report to campus Tuesday. Full squad two-a-day practices begin Thursday, Aug. 9.

Ole Miss opens its 2001 campaign at home versus Murray State Sept. 1. The game is set for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
