NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Chantelle Anderson's improved rebounding is paying off for Vanderbilt.
Anderson had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 8 Vanderbilt to a 62-42 victory over Mississippi on Sunday.
"We had a great defensive effort, for the fourth time in a row," Vanderbilt coach Jim Foster said. "We've done some things defensively that have made Chantelle a better defender, more of a force in the middle.
"We gave Mississippi a lot of different looks, changed things up. I think they tried to get a little more patient to try to figure what we were doing."
The victory helped Vanderbilt (16-3, 2-1 SEC) sweep a four-game homestand and extend its home winning streak to 16 games.
"I've been working harder on the boards," Anderson said. "I'm blocking people out and grabbing the ball."
Mississippi used a deliberate game to build a 5-0 lead seven minutes in.
Vanderbilt countered with a 30-2 run for a 30-17 lead at the break.
"We started slowly - slower than we had in our previous games," Anderson said. "But we woke up."
Vanderbilt pushed its lead to 44-24 with 11 minutes to play. Mississippi (9-7, 1-2) cut its deficit to 10 points behind freshmen Amber Watts and Carletta Brown. Watts scored on a putback to make it 48-38 with 6:36 left.
Zuzi Klimesova scored on Vanderbilt's next two possessions, extending the lead to 54-40, and Abi Ramsey followed with consecutive 3-pointers to restore the 20-point margin with 2:29 left.
"We knew it would take a consistent effort across the board to have a chance against a good Vanderbilt team," Mississippi coach Ron Aldy said. "We executed early, we hit some shots.
"Defensively, we played hard enough to make them earn what they got. But we didn't shoot it well enough or rebound it well enough in that decisive stretch."
Klimesova and Ashley Earley each finished with 14 points for Vanderbilt. Ramsey added 11.
Watts scored 10 to lead the Lady Rebels, who shot 14-for-47 from the field.
