Men's Tennis Downs UALR 6-1 In Season Opener

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team proved its No. 5 national ranking worthy, downing Arkansas-Little Rock 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center to begin the 2002 season.
The Rebels dominated in doubles play to claim the first point of the match. The senior duo of Kristofer Stahlberg and Martin Selin were perfect in a 8-0 win over Mariano Pettigrosso and Juan Carlos Baca at No. 1 doubles. Alex Hartman and Mason Cousins cruised to a 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles against Jarrad Bunt and Mithun Murali to clinch the point.
Hartman, an All-American and ranked No. 21 in the nation, needed little time to get by 28th-ranked Pettigrosso 6-1, 6-2 at the top spot in singles. Ciorascu, rated No. 64 in singles, defeated the Trojan's Baca 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to win his 15th match of the year.
With the Rebels up 3-0, 51st-ranked Stahlberg finished off UALR's Luciano Diez 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to clinch the win. Head coach Billy Chadwick picked up his 294th victory with the Rebels, as he inches closer to win number 300.
"We did a good job of jumping on them early in doubles and staying focused the rest of the match," Chadwick said. "UALR played in our tournament in the fall, so our guys new they had a very good team. That helped with our preparation for this match."
Sophomore transfer Claes Lindholm dominated the Trojan's Murali 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and then Selin finished off the scoring with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Alexi Poutchinets at No. 4 singles.
