In football, it's the quarterback, and basketball has the point guard. Those two positions usually prove vital in how the team will perform in competition. For baseball, that burden - for the most part - falls on the pitcher. The Rebels have one of the nation's best in Alan Horne, who has also proven himself a strong performer in the classroom.
One of the country's top recruits out of high school, Horne, in only his first season in 2002, showed why he was one of the top picks in the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft. He posted a 5-2 record and 4.97 ERA in 12 starts. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound right-hander struck out 31 in 54.1 innings pitched and limited opponents to a .226 batting-average-against. At one point during the 2001 campaign, the Marianna, Fla., native won five-straight decisions. For his performance, Horne was a Louisville Slugger All-America honorable mention pick by Collegiate Baseball.
The Ole Miss/John Millington Academic Excellence Scholarship recipient, Horne earned University of Mississippi Athletic Association (UMAA) Honor Roll distinction both semesters last year. The Business Studies major is also a member of the Rebel 3.0 Club, which recognizes returning student-athletes who maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. A National Honor Society member at Marianna High School, Horne won a National Science Merit Award and was a Florida Academic Scholar.
For excellence in both baseball and academics, Alan Horne is this week's Allstate Insurance Student-Athlete of the Week.
