OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss signed three players to national letters of intent to play baseball for the Rebels during the early fall signing period, head coach Mike Bianco announced Wednesday. All three will be eligible for the 2003-2004 academic year.
The Rebels signed infielder Justin Henry, of Vicksburg High School, left-handed pitcher Chris Holloman, of Jones County (Miss.) Junior College, and infielder/right-handed pitcher Brett Jones, of Laurel High School.
"Brett and Justin are two very talented infielders from inside the state," Bianco said. "We're excited about them signing with us, and we look forward to getting them into our program. Chris is an outstanding left-handed pitcher that had a tremendous freshman year in junior college, and he should help add more depth to our staff."
Henry, 6-feet-3, 170 pounds, is a two-time All-County and All-District selection, and participated in the 2002 East Coast Professional Showcase. He batted .389 last spring, as a junior, with two home runs and 26 RBIs and was 37-of-38 in stolen base attempts. Henry also earned three letters in football and was an All-County and All-Region 2-5A quarterback.
Holloman, 6-feet-1, 210 pounds from The Woodlands, Texas, earned All-State honors last season for Jones County. He recorded a 10-1 mark with two saves in 15 appearances, and recorded a 3.21 ERA in 86 innings with 75 strikeouts. Holloman also pitched two no-hitters last season in earning All-Region honors and helping Jones County to the 2002 state championship and a Region 23 runner-up finish.
Jones, 6-feet-2, 190 pounds, is a three-time All-Area and All-Region performer. He has a three-year varsity career batting average of .426 with 12 HRs and 85 RBIs. Jones has also earned Laurel's Most Valuable Pitcher Award and has a career record of 17-5 with a 1.78 ERA and six saves. He is the younger brother of Lance Jones, who played third base for the Rebels during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. His uncle, Julian Fagan, was an All-SEC punter for the Rebel football team from 1967-1969.
Ole Miss is coming off a 37-19 campaign from a year ago, and the Rebels are scheduled to open their 2003 schedule on Friday, Feb. 14 against Louisiana Tech in Oxford.
