Lady Rebels Dominate Birmingham Southern For 83-44 Win

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore center Amber Watts recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds as Ole Miss (6-0) rolled over Birmingham Southern (3-4), 83-44, for its sixth-straight win to open the season.
"Amber played really well inside today," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "She dominated inside offensively and also was aggressive defensively. She opened things up for us."
Ole Miss scored first on a steal and lay-up by junior forward Tia Watson. BSC tied it up at two all on a jumper by center Brooke Gentsch. The Lady Rebels again took the lead when Watts scored inside and would lead the rest of the way.
Ole Miss used a strong pressure defense to force 28 Panther turnovers on 17 turnovers. Freshman forward Ellen Buchanan collected three steals to lead the Lady Rebels as nine different player recorded a steal for Ole Miss.
"Our defense was very good today," said Aldy. "If we can get that kind of effort out of our players on a regular basis we have the ability to make some things happen. Our defense gave us a lot more opportunities to score the basketball."
Watts was joined by three other players in double figures as freshman guard Ashley Johnson had 13 points, senior forward Leah Henley added 11 points and freshman center Marie Deparrois chipped in 10 points off the bench.
The Lady Rebels out-rebounded BSC 47-to-33 led by Watts' 11. Buchanan grabbed seven boards, while Deparrois and Henley controlled six caroms a piece. Sophomore guard Carletta Brown and Buchanan led Ole Miss in assists with four.
Birmingham Southern was led by Amy Woods with eight points. Atia Agee added seven points and Lindsay Boyett, Gentsch and April Walker scored six points each. Boyett and Stacey Anthony each corralled five rebounds.
Ole Miss made 33-of-71 shots from the field, good for 46.5 percent. The drilled 9-of-24 three pointers and made 8-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Lady Rebels recorded 19 assists and six blocks.
BSC made 18-of-53 from the field, good for 34.0 percent. They hit 2-of-13 from beyond the arc and made 6-of-11 free throws. The Panthers dished out eight assists and had just one block.
Ole Miss will return to the Tad Smith Coliseum court on Monday, Dec. 16, when they host Western Kentucky. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
