OXFORD, Miss. - With spring football drills set to open here Friday at Ole Miss, head coach David Cutcliffe announced Monday that offensive lineman Gus Carwell has decided to pass up his senior season.

Carwell, a 6-3, 308 pound lineman from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., would have been a fifth year senior this fall, having been redshirted in 1998, which was his true freshman season.

Carwell, who lettered the last two seasons, has had an injury-plagued career at Ole Miss. He played four games in 2000 before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Arkansas State, which forced him to have ALC surgery.

After being held out of spring workouts in 2001, Carwell returned to play in nine games last season, missing the Arkansas and Mississippi State games.
