HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss scored three runs in the fourth inning and got 5 1/3 solid innings from starter Stephen Castleman to defeat No. 10 Ole Miss 5-1 in front of a crowd 2,888 on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

Castleman (2-0) limited the Rebels to one run while scattering nine hits and walking two. He also struck out four.

Cliff Russum pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to notch his second save.

The Golden Eagles (7-1) took advantage of a passed ball and an Ole Miss (6-2) error to break a scoreless tie with the three-run fourth. Jarrett Hoffpauir drew a lead-off walk and Bobby Garner followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After a passed ball moved both runners up 90 feet, Clint Stoy fouled out to first for the first out of the inning.

Al Simontis then came on in relief of starter T.J. Beam, and Matt Benson hit a ground ball to short that scored Hoffpauir. A Chad Sterbens' throwing error on the play also allowed Garner to score and make it 2-0. Benson would later score on a Allen Winningham, two-out single.

Beam (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. He also fanned three.

Ole Miss answered with a run in the fifth when Jonathan Swearingen, who singled to start the inning, scored on a double play grounder off the bat of Josh Christian.

Southern Miss added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run double down the right field line by Carlos Velasquez.

Jeff Cook went 4-for-5 at the plate for Southern Miss, as the Golden Eagles out-hit the Rebels 11-8.

Burney Hutchinson and Seth Smith had two hits each for Ole Miss.

The two teams combined to strand 23 runners on base, including 11 by Ole Miss. The Rebels stranded six in scoring position, including four at third base.

Ole Miss will return to action Friday when the Rebels host Eastern Illinois at 6:30 p.m, at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the opener of a three-game weekend series.
