Indiana State Ends Rebels Win Streak At Six

OXFORD, Miss. - ,Right fielder Kevin Egli's two-run single capped a four-run sixth inning to give Indiana State a 5-2 lead and the Sycamores then held on to salvage the final game of three-game series against No. 9 Ole Miss with a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The loss snapped Ole Miss' six-game win streak as the Rebels fell to 12-3. Indiana State improved to 3-4.
Egli and third baseman Chris Hall both recorded two-hits each for the Sycamores.
Freshman right fielder Seth Smith went 4-for-5 with an RBI for Ole Miss as both teams recorded nine hits each.
Greg Wear (1-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks, while also striking out three.
Joe Thatcher pitched 2 1/3 innings to earn his first save of the year.
Nick Bradshaw (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Freshman right-hander Alan Horne worked four innings before being lifted due to a pitch count. The first-round draft choice of Cleveland in last June's Major League Baseball Draft, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out three in his home debut.
Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Drew Rogers hit a two-out, two-run double to pull the Rebels within 5-4.
Indiana State added another run in the eighth on Ben Vannatter's RBI single to score John Purdom, who reached on a one-out error by shortstop Chad Sterbens.
Ole Miss threatened to tie in the bottom half of the eighth as Josh Christian and Dustin Cliburn hit back-to-doubles to start the inning and put runners on second and third. Matt Tolbert followed with a grounder to first that scored pinch-runner John Reeder from third to make it 6-5 and advance Matt Mossberg, pinch-running for Cliburn, to third.
Pinch-hitter Jonathan Swearingen then hit a line drive to third baseman Chris Hall, who doubled off Mossberg at third to end the inning.
Thatcher retired the Rebels in order in the ninth to seal the win.
Ole Miss will return action Tuesday night when the Rebels begin a five-game road trip at Louisiana-Monroe. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Ole Miss will play two games at Louisiana-Monroe before opening SEC play with a three-game series at Florida next weekend.
