First baseman Ryan Shealy hit three home runs and center fielder Matt Goss hit two homers as No. 6 Florida hit six on the night to roll past No. 10 Ole Miss 24-5 Friday night, in front of 2,011 at McKethan Stadium at Perry Field in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
Goss and Shealy twice hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning as the Gators (16-3, 1-0 SEC) sent 15 batters to the plate during a nine-run inning to build a 16-2 lead. They opened the inning with back-to-back solo shots off reliever Nick Bradshaw to make it 9-2. Later in the inning, Goss added a three-run blast to make it 15-2 and Shealy followed with another solo home run to cap the inning.
Shealy also hit a grand slam in the ninth to make it 24-5, as he finished the evening 3-for-7 with six RBIs. Goss went 2-for-5 with four RBIs as the Gators pounded out 22 hits off six Ole Miss pitchers.
Jonathan Swearingen went 3-for-5 at the plate for Ole Miss (13-4, 0-1) as the Rebels recorded 15 hits. Freshman right fielder Seth Smith went 2-for-5 with a RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Jimmy Ramshaw (2-0) pitched seven innings to earn the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits and one walk, and striking out eight.
Pete Montrenes (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.
The 24-5 loss marked the Rebels' biggest margin of defeat since a 24-5 loss at Texas Christian on March 16, 1994.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CST), Saturday afternoon. Junior right-hander J.R. Pickens (3-0, 2.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against Florida right-hander Alex Hart (5-0, 0.58).
