Ole Miss Tracksters Open Outdoor Season At SEC Quad

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2002 outdoor season at the SEC Quadrangular hosted by Mississippi State on Saturday. Ole Miss recorded four first-place finishes on the day with junior Stacy Andrews leading the way with two of the top marks.

Andrews brought home the gold medal in both the discus throw (169-11) and the hammer throw (189-4). In addition to Andrews' first place marks, senior Chika Chuku placed first in the 400 meters (55.62) and freshman Octavia Carter led the way in the high jump (5-6.5).

Freshmen Kesia Bass and LaToya McBride finished right behind Carter in the high jump as both cleared 5-4.5 and finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Sophomore Demetria Burks placed third in the 800 meters (2:19.25) for the Lady Rebels.

Freshman Brandie Plyler set a new Ole Miss record in the pole vault with her leap of 11-1.75. Junior Melissa Jones placed second in the javelin (121-1) and junior Amanda Harvey placed third in the hammer throw (144-1), fourth in the shot put (37-5) and fifth in the discus (119-9).

Freshman Shantel Glass, fresh off his first All-America performance at last weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, placed second in the long jump with his distance of 25-0.75. Other second place finishers for the Rebels were freshman Clinton Fletcher in the 200 meters (21.44), sophomore Franz Bernard in the 400 meters (47.30), junior Matt Carter in the 5,000 meters (16:46.07), junior Jimmy Radford in the pole vault (16-00) and junior Walt Sligh in the shot put (49-7.25).

Freshman Brandon Atkinson placed third in the triple jump (47-10) and sophomore Brett Canale finished third in the hammer throw (146-9).

Ole Miss will return to the track next weekend when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Alabama Relays. Action will begin on Thursday, March 21, and conclude on Sunday, March 24.
