OXFORD, Miss. - Junior J.R. Pickens pitched his first complete game to lead No. 16 Ole Miss to a 9-3 win over No. 14 LSU Friday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
Pickens scattered eight hits while allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out eight to improve to 4-1.
Ole Miss led 6-0 after two innings as the Rebels touched LSU starter Bo Pettit for three runs in the first and second. Chad Sterbens' put Ole Miss on the board with a two-run single in the first, and Drew Rogers added a two-RBI single to cap the three-run second and make it 6-0.
Pettit lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs, four earned, on seven hits and eight walks to drop to 2-3. He also struck out five.
LSU scored a run in the third when Matt Heath stole third and scored on Charlie Waite's throwing error to make it 6-1. The Tigers wouldn't threaten to score again until the ninth, as Pickens allowed just one base runner to reach second from the fourth until the eighth inning.
Sterbens and Josh Christian had two hits each as the Rebels out-hit the Tigers 11-8. Christian also finished with three RBIs.
The two teams will continue their three-game series Saturday at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Sophomore left-hander Lane Mestepey (3-2, 3.43 ERA) is scheduled to start for LSU against Ole Miss senior right-hander Pete Montrenes (5-1, 4.60 ERA).
