OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore left-hander Lane Mestepey pitched a complete game to lead No. 14 LSU to a 6-5 win over No. 16 Ole Miss Saturday afternoon in front of 4,195 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, the seventh largest in the facility's history.

Mestepey overcame a career-high five walks to hold the Rebels to five runs, four earned, on 10 hits to improve to 4-2. The complete game was the second of his career.

Blake Gill broke a 4-4 tie with a two-out single that scored Aaron Hill, who walked to lead-off the inning. The Tigers then added another run in the eighth on a double by Hill.

Ole Miss answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Josh Christian sac fly to center that scored Drew Rogers.

The Rebels threatened to tie in the bottom of the ninth as Barry Gunter was hit by a Mestepey pitch to start the inning. A batter later, Jonathan Swearingen walked to put runners on first and second with one out. However, Seth Smith bounced into a fielder's choice and Rogers hit a soft liner back to Mestepey for the final out of the game.

Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes (5-2) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Gill finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs for LSU as five different Tigers recorded two hits each.

Burney Hutchinson finished 2-for-4, including hitting his fifth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the third that pulled Ole Miss to within 4-2.

The Tigers out-hit the Rebels 12-10.

LSU scored two runs in the first and added a run in each the second and third to build a 4-0 lead. Ole Miss answered with two runs in the third on Hutchinson's home run and scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.

Ole Miss and LSU will play the rubber-match of this weekend's three-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Freshman right-hander Alan Horne (0-1, 7.11) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against LSU junior right-hander Jake Tompkins (2-0, 3.34).
