OXFORD, Miss. - Josh Christian hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to lift No. 16 Ole Miss to a 10-7 win over No. 14 LSU in the rubber-match of this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series, Sunday afternoon in front of 3,872 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Ole Miss (16-7, 2-4 SEC) trailed 7-4 entering the eighth inning before sending 10 batters to the plate during the six-run inning. With runners on first and second, Seth Smith reached base on a catcher's interference to load the bases. Weylin Guidry then came on in relief of Brad David and walked pinch-hitter Dustin Cliburn to make it 7-5.
Chad Sterbens followed with a sac fly to right that score Burney Hutchinson to pull the Rebels within 7-6. Guidry then issued a two-out walk to Drew Rogers to reload the bases.
Brian Wilson then came on in relief and Christian belted a 2-0 pitch, 408 feet to left center for his first career grand slam.
Adam Yates pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his third save of the year.
Christian's grand slam helped Ole Miss overcome four errors on the afternoon, including two in the seventh inning that led to three runs to help LSU (15-11, 2-4 SEC) break a 4-4 tie.
Glen Morris (1-0), the third of four Rebel pitchers on the afternoon, worked an inning of scoreless relief to earn his first win since March 11, 2000.
Guidry (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he was charged with two runs on two walks in 0.1 innings.
Matt Tolbert went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as Ole Miss out-hit LSU 11-8.
The Rebels will be back in action Monday night at 6:30 p.m., when they host Austin Peay in a rescheduled game from Feb. 26. Ole Miss will also host Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., before opening a three-game series at Kentucky next Friday.
