Ole Miss Tracksters Claim Top Spots At Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss track and field squads picked up four first place finishes and three provisional qualifying marks for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships over the weekend at the 2002 Alabama Relays.

Leading the way for Ole Miss was junior Willisa Heintz. Heintz picked up one provisional qualifying mark (200 meters) and two first-place finishes (100 meters, 200 meters). Heintz clocked in at 11.75 in winning the 100 meters and had a provisional qualifying mark of 23.51 in winning the 200 meters. Both of Heintz?performances were not only first place marks at the Alabama Relays, but also rank her second on the Ole Miss all-time charts.

Freshman Shantel Glass continues to impress as he won the long jump with a provisional qualifying distance of 25-8. Glass?personal best mark in the long jump was also good enough for first place at the 2002 Alabama Relays and fourth place in the Ole Miss record books.

Sophomore Kendrick Triggs picked up Ole Miss?final first-place finish and provisional qualifying mark of the meet with his time of 20.84 in the 200 meters. In addition to his victory in the 200 meters, Triggs finished eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.85.

Junior Stacy Andrews placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 177-5. Andrews also placed second in the discus throw with a toss of 173-5. Freshman Antwon Hicks placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Hicks clocked in at 14.37 in the event.

Freshman Kesia Bass placed second in the heptathlon with her point total of 4.730. Bass, competing in her first collegiate heptathlon, recorded the third best mark in Ole Miss history. Senior Chika Chuku finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:11.67) and sixth in the 400 meters (56.60), and freshman Chiquita Stephens placed seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 12.13.

The Rebels faired pretty well in the relay portion of the meet. The 4x200-meter team placed second, while the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams both placed third. The Lady Rebel relay teams also did well, as they earned second place finishes in the 4x100, 4x200 and 1600-meter sprint medley relays. The Lady Rebel 4x400-meter team and 4x800-meter teams both placed sixth.
