REBEL GAME NOTES
AT A GLANCE: No. 15 Ole Miss (17-7) will conclude a five-game in five-night stretch tonight when the Rebels host the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (5-24) at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. This is the second meeting of the year between the two schools. Ole Miss won the earlier meeting 20-6 on Feb. 19 in Oxford. Junior right-hander Kyle Bateman (0-0, 2.70 ERA) will get his first career start in tonight's game. Bateman has made three relief appearances, so far, this season, having allowed one run on five hits and has struck out three in 3.1 innings. The Rebels enter tonight's game winners of four of their last five. Mississippi Valley State enters tonight's contest having lost 7-of-8, including three straight. The Delta Devils' starter is TBA. Tonight's game can be heard locally in Oxford on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM with David Kellum and Gary Darby, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: Mike Gray pitched five scoreless innings and T.J. Beam struck out six over the final four innings as the pair combined on a three-hitter in a 3-1 win over Austin Peay last night. Gray (1-0) allowed only one hit and one walk, while striking out two to earn the win in his first start of 2002. Beam allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk to notch his first career save. Bryce Morrison gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead when he tripled in the fourth to score Burney Hutchinson. Morrison then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Ole Miss added an insurance run in the eighth on Seth Smith's single up the middle to score Charlie Waite.

MAYOR'S TROPHY TICKETS ON SALE: Tickets for the April 3 Mayor's Trophy game versus Mississippi State in Jackson are currently on sale through phone orders only at the Smith-Wills Stadium Ticket Office. The number to call is (601) 362-2294. Prices are $10 for reserved seats and $6 for general admission. Only Visa and Mastercard is accepted.

IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss moved up one spot in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30 to No. 15, fell one spot to No. 18 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25, leaped five places to No. 19 in the Baseball America Top 25, and re-entered the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll at No. 17, after falling out of last week's poll.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE: The Delta Devils have dropped seven of their last eight after being swept in a three-game series this past weekend at Lipscomb. MVSU is hitting .244 as a team led by junior outfielder Robert Reynolds' .330 average. Junior catcher Tim Klick is hitting .280 and leads the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (19). As a team, MVSU has hit only 11 homers in 29 games, but has stole 41 bases in 54 attempts, led by Reynolds' nine. Delta Devil pitchers have a team ERA of 7.33, and opponents are hitting .337 against them with 25 home runs.

REBELS VS. DELTA DEVILS: Tonight's meeting is third all-time between Ole Miss and Mississippi Valley State ... The Rebels have won both of the previous two meetings, winning 12-0 last year on May 1, and 20-6 this season on Feb. 19. Both games took place in Oxford.

AFTER 24 GAMES LAST SEASON: The Rebels were 18-5-1 after 24 games last season ... Ole Miss was hitting .301 (244x810) with 49 doubles, 10 triples, 23 home runs and 147 RBIs ... The Rebels stole 15 bases in 24 attempts and grounded into 19 double plays ... They were outscoring their opponents 170-102 ... Rebel pitchers had a 3.25 ERA (213.0 IP, 77 ER), allowing 193 hits, including 12 home runs, walked 81 and had struck out 166 ... Ole Miss had committed 34 errors in 24 games.

REBEL MISCELLANEOUS: Following tonight's game, Ole Miss is not scheduled to play at home again until Friday, April 5 when the Rebels open a three-game SEC series with Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. ... Senior OF Burney Hutchinson went 1x4 with a double last night to record his 200th career hit. He is eighth on the school's career hit list. The two-bagger was the 42nd of his career to put him in sole possession of eighth place on the school's career list. The run scored was the 164th of his career, moving him to within three of tying Kyle Gordon (1984-87) for third place with 167 ... Hutchinson also brings an 11-game hitting streak into tonight's contest, tying him with Seth Smith for the longest streak by a Rebel this season ... A win tonight would put Ole Miss 11 games over the .500-mark for the first time this season ... The five hits by the Rebels last night was a season low ... Last night was the sixth time this season that Rebel pitchers did not allow an extra-base hit.
