OXFORD, Miss. - Four Ole Miss track and field athletes will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete in the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships. Competition begins on Friday and will be completed Saturday evening at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track facility on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
The Rebels will be represented at the 38th annual meet by junior James Shelton, sophomore Kendrick Triggs and freshman Shantel Glass. Shelton, who was the NCAA runner-up in the 60 meters a year ago, enters the meet with third fastest time in the event this season with a time of 6.62. Triggs, competing in his first NCAA meet, enters as the second fastest qualifier in the 200 meters with a time of 20.68.
Glass will be looking to earn Ole Miss' second-straight long jump title at the NCAA Indoor Championships as Savante' Stringfellow won the 2001 championship. Glass jumped a season's best 25-1.75 at last weekend's LSU Last Ditch Meet to qualify for the meet. He enters Friday's competition with the 12th best qualifying mark.
Junior Willisa Heintz will be the lone Lady Rebel at the 20th annual meet for the women. Heintz, a native of Dallas, Texas, will be competing in the 200 meters for Ole Miss. She enters the meet ranked 14th in the event.
The Rebels finished the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships with their second highest finish in school history as they scored 18 points and finished tied for 10th. The Lady Rebels finished tied for 31st place, behind Teneeshia Jones' three All-America performances.
Glass will kick off the competition for Ole Miss as he will start the long jump at 4 p.m. (CST) on Friday. Shelton will begin preliminaries in the 60 meters at 6 p.m. on Friday, with finals being run at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday evening. Triggs and Heintz will run both prelimaries and finals on Friday night, with preliminaries in the 200 meters beginning at 6:50 p.m. and finals following at 8:20 p.m.
