Rebels Drop Softball Doubleheader At Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Ole Miss fell victim to life on the road in the SEC, dropping both games of a softball doubleheader Wednesday at Mississippi State, 1-0 and 8-1. The Rebels (23-15, 5-9 SEC) look to salvage the finale of the three-game set Thursday at 5 p.m. CST at MSU Softball Complex.
Leslie Day's bid for her 10th victory fell short in the early game. The junior from Nesbit, Miss., was on the short-end of a pitcher's duel, surrendering only three hits and one unearned run over the full six innings.
Amy Mosley plated the Bulldogs' (26-19, 8-8 SEC) lone score in the fifth inning. She reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a Jennifer Jessup single and came home on an outfield throwing error.
Kasey Whitehead (15-8) and Kellie Wilkerson combined on the two-hit shutout for State. Wilkerson tossed a perfect seventh inning for her 10th save.
In the late game, the Bulldogs scored a run in each of the first three innings and sealed the doubleheader sweep with a four-run fifth. The game was tied at 1-1 in the second inning, after Ole Miss junior Jessica Hamilton drove home Andrea Brahs on an RBI-groundout.
However, MSU responded with a Whitehead run-scoring double in the bottom of the second, and padded the lead with a pair of two-run baseknocks by Kate Jaspers and Brooke Best in the fifth.
The duo of Whitehead (16-8) and Wilkerson handled the mound duty for State again in game two, limiting the Rebels two four hits. UM righthander Lindsay Price (5-6) lasted 4.2 innings in the loss.
Phyllis Manley and DeDe Justice each collected two hits in the twin bill for Ole Miss, who falls to 0-8 on the road in conference play this year. However, the Rebels have won three-of-four series finales all-time vs. Mississippi State.
