OXFORD, Miss. - Jonathan Swearingen's grand slam in the sixth inning capped a five-run sixth inning and broke open a 3-1 game and lead No. 9 Ole Miss to an 8-1 win over Arkansas State Tuesday evening in front of 1,564 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The win improved the Rebels to 30-8 on the season and secured a fifth straight 30-win season for the first time in school history. Arkansas State dropped to 16-20 on the year with the loss.
Kyle Bateman (3-0) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two, and was the designated the pitcher of the record. The Rebels used a total of five pitchers on the night, combining to hold the Indians to five hits, recording nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Dustin Cliburn went 3-for-5 to lead Ole Miss' 16-hit attack, as the 10 different players recorded at least one hit on the evening. Freshman outfielder Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI to tie the Ole Miss freshman record for hits with 55, set last year by Matt Tolbert. Burney Hutchinson went 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and tying his career long.
Ole Miss scored a run in the first on a Drew Rogers RBI single and plated two more in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
Arkansas State's lone run of the evening came on Dusty Sexton's single in the seventh to score Brad Hayes and make it 8-1.
The Rebels will return to Southeastern Conference action this Friday when they open a three-game series at Alabama. Friday's game time has been changed from 6:30 p.m., to 4 p.m., and Saturday's game has also been changed from 4 p.m., to 2 p.m., due to Alabama hosting the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships.
