Lady Rebels Hand Out Hardware At Season-Ending Banquet

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team held its 2001-02 awards banquet Tuesday night with Von Kirk bringing home MVP honors. The 5-foot-10 senior led the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game and finished her Lady Rebel career ranked third on the chart for three-pointers made with 141 in her three-year career.

Kirk, a Huntsville, Ala., native, led Ole Miss in minutes played with 805 minutes of action. Kirk ranked second on the team in steals with 51 and third on the team in assists with 49.

Freshmen Carletta Brown and Ally Kelly both received the Newcomer of the Year Award. Brown played in all 28 games, starting the last 11 for the Lady Rebels. She was the fifth leading scorer as she chipped in 7.4 points per game. She was also second on the team in assists with 50. Kelly played in all 28 games, starting 20. She was the third leading scorer on the team with 9.7 points per game. She was named to the Gran-Tree Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team.

Senior Saundra Jackson, who was recently drafted in the third round of the WNBA Draft by the Orlando Miracle, received the Best Offensive Player Award. Jackson led Ole Miss in field goal percentage as she hit 107-of-95 shots from the field, good for 54.9 percent. She averaged 9.3 points per game and 4.5 rebounds.

Freshman Amber Watts, a native of Utica, Miss., was honored with the Best Defensive Player Award. Watts led the team and ranked third in the SEC with 50 blocks on the season. She also averaged 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Senior Sherika Wright won the Playmaker Award. Wright led the Lady Rebels in assists with 131. She also led the team in steals with 57 and was second in scoring with 10.4 points per game. The Augusta, Ga., native was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Temple University Classic.

Junior Leah Henley received the 2002 Lady Rebel Award. Henley played in 27 games, starting four. She missed just one game during the season, despite battling through several injuries. The Lady Rebel Award is given to the player that provides the most inspiration throughout the season.

The Scholar-Athlete Award was given to senior TaShondrea Moton. Moton, a 5-foot-10 Prattville, Ala., native, is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She has served on the Ole Miss Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the last two years along with being named to the Chancellor's honor roll (two semesters), the Dean's honor roll (two semesters) and the U.M.A.A. honor roll (two semesters) while at Ole Miss. Moton was also named to the 2002 SEC Good Works Team.

In addition to the Scholar-Athlete Award, Moton was also honored for being named the recipient of the 2002 Eugenia Conner Award. She was presented with the award prior to the 2002 "Grove Bowl."

The Lady Rebels finished the 2001-02 season with an 11-17 overall record and a 3-11 mark in SEC play.
