Ole Miss Tracksters Perform Well In Weekend Action

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams competed in three different meets over the weekend, but had good results at all three. One contigent of athletes competed at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, another group participated at the ULM Invitational and a third group took part in the Knoxville Invitational.

At Saturday's Penn Relays competition, freshman Antwon Hicks placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Hicks clocked in at 13.94 in the event. Fellow freshman Brandon Atkinson also took home a fourth place finish. Atkinson jumped 49-5.5 in the triple jump.

The Rebel 4x200-meter relay team composed of freshman Chris Lawson and sophomores Kendrick Triggs, Clinton Fletcher and Franz Bernard finished fifth with a time of 1:25.14. The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team finished seventh with a time of 3:13.93.

Junior April Rembert and senior Wanikka Vance led the way at the ULM Invitational. Rembert collected two first-place finishes. She took home the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles (13.88) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.88). Vance took first place in the 100 meters (11.83) and finished second in the 200 meters (23.83).

Freshman Brandie Plyler finished first in the pole vault (10-6), and freshman Kesia Bass placed third in the long jump (18-1.5).

Junior Stacy Andrews led the Rebels at the ULM Invitational with his first place finish in the discus throw. Andrews improved on his personal best and Ole Miss record in the discus throw with his mark of 186-10. Freshman Tanner Griffin placed second in the pole vault with his height of 14-00.

The majority of the Ole Miss throwers took part in the Knoxville Invitational on Sunday. Leadin the way was junior Melissa Jones as she won the women's javelin throw with her mark of 136-5. Junior Amanda Harvey placed second in the shot put (41-2.5), fourth in the hammer throw (147-1) and sixth in the discus throw (134-10).

Sophomore Brett Canale placed third in the men's hammer throw (159-2) and fifth in the shot put (46-8), while junior Walt Sligh placed fourth in the shot put (48-7) and fifth in the hammer throw (138-1).

Ole Miss will take next weekend off in preparations for the SEC Championships. The SEC Championships will take place May 9-12 in Starkville, Miss.
