OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss signed left-handed pitcher Taylor Fowler, of West Memphis High School, to a national letter of intent to play baseball for the Rebels, Head Coach Mike Bianco announced Wednesday. Fowler will be eligible for the Rebels in the 2002-2003 academic year.

Fowler, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, was 6-2 this spring with a 1.23 ERA and had struck out 76 while walking 19 in 57 innings pitched heading into the 5A state playoffs.

As a junior, he was an All-Conference performer while recording a 2.27 ERA and striking out 52.

"Taylor is a very talented high school pitcher," Bianco said. "We've been looking to add some left-handers to our staff, and with his ability, we feel he's someone who can come in and compete in our program as a freshman."

Ole Miss is currently 37-16 on the season and ranked as high as No. 16 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30. The Rebels are 14-13 in the Southeastern Conference, tied for third in the SEC Western Division, and can clinch a spot in next week's SEC Tournament with a win over Mississippi State this weekend.

Ole Miss opens its series against the Bulldogs Friday at 6:30 p.m., at Dudy-Noble Field, Polk-Dement Stadium in Starkville.
