BATON ROUGE, La. - Despite rainy conditions at Bernie Moore Track Stadium, the Ole Miss 4x100-meter relay team set a new school record and earned All-America honors by placing sixth with a season's best time of 39.56 in Friday's action at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
After enduring a 30 minute delay for thunderstorms that passed through the Baton Rouge area, freshmen Chris Lawson (New Orleans, La.) and Taye Biddle (Decatur, Ala.) and sophomores Kendrick Triggs (Memphis, Tenn.) and James Shelton (Toomsuba, Miss.) combined forces to run the fastest time in Ole Miss history.
"We had pretty good hand-offs all the way around," said Shelton. "We put together a good race for being such a young team. We have two more years to improve together."
"To be on the sixth-best sprint team in the country says a lot," said Biddle. "There are a lot of fast guys out there and to be an All-American is a huge honor for us."
The All-America honor was the first for both Lawson and Biddle, while it was the second for both Triggs and Shelton. Triggs earned All-America honors in the 2002 indoor 200 meters and Shelton earned All-America honors in the 2001 indoor 60 meters.
Freshman hurdler Antwon Hicks (Hot Springs, Ark.) will look to add his name to the list of 2002 Rebel All-Americans. Hicks advanced to Saturday's finals in the 110-meter hurdles by running 13.69 in Friday's semifinals.
"I did not run my best race today," said Hicks. "I am still happy with my performance. My goal was to get to the finals and I accomplished that today.
"I am going to approach the finals with the mindset that I am in it to win it. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain."
Hicks will compete in Saturday's 110-meter hurdle final at 7 p.m.
