BATON ROUGE, La. - Ole Miss freshman hurdler Antwon Hicks earned his first All-America honor on Saturday by placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles. Hicks clocked in at 13.69 in the finals after running 13.59 in the preliminaries and 13.64 in the semifinals.
"I am very satisfied with my race," said Hicks. "To earn All-America as a freshman is huge. I think it is a great conclusion for my freshman year."
Hicks currently ranks in the top 10 in the world in the 110-hurdles for all competitors and is the top junior competitor in the United States and the world. His best time of 13.59 stands as the Ole Miss record and his fifth-place finish at the NCAA meet marks the best ever freshman finish in Ole Miss history.
"Antwon has had a tremendous season," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "He ran three of his top four times of the year at the biggest meet of his life. He has an exceptional competitive nature."
Ole Miss finished the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships with nine team points. In addition to Hicks' fifth-place finish, the Rebel 4x100-meter relay team of Chris Lawson, Kendrick Triggs, Taye Biddle and James Shelton placed sixth on Friday.
