OXFORD, Miss. - First baseman/designated hitter Josh Christian signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers on Friday and was assigned to the Rangers' Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, the Savannah Sand Gnats in Savannah, Ga.

Christian, 6-feet-4, 230 pounds from Clinton, Miss., served as the designated hitter in Savannah's Friday night game against the Charleston (SC) River Dogs, and went 1-for-5 with an RBI.

"We're very excited for Josh and his family about this opportunity," said Ole Miss Head Coach Mike Bianco. "He played a pivotal part in the development of our program over the past two seasons. We wish him the best of luck."

Christian hit .319 with 21 home runs and 96 RBIs in 116 games during his two years at Ole Miss. He hit .351 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs as a junior in 2001 to earn second team All-Southeastern Conference honors as a designated hitter, and helped the Rebels earn a spot in the NCAA Regionals.

This past spring, Christian hit .280 with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in.
