OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss baseball signed Riverside (CA) Community College right-handed pitcher Jeremy Zick to a national letter of intent, Head Coach Mike Bianco announced Thursday. Zick will be eligible for the 2002-2003 academic year.
Zick, 6-feet-1, 205 pounds, posted a 10-1 career record with a 2.41 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 123 1/3 innings in two years at Riverside.
"We're very excited about Jeremy deciding to sign with Ole Miss," Bianco said. "He was an outstanding pitcher at the junior college level from a very good program at Riverside. He is someone we think can come in and be effective for us this spring."
This past spring as a sophomore, Zick appeared in 11 games, making eight starts, going 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 49 2/3 innings. He also recorded 37 strikeouts and walked 24.
As a freshman in 2001, Zick went 8-0 with a 1.10 ERA in 11 appearances, including 10 starts, while helping the Tigers to the California state championship. He also struck out 48 and walked 20, while limiting opponents to a .149 batting-average-against in 73 2/3 innings.
Zick was drafted in the 39th round by the Texas Rangers following the 2001 season.
Riverside Community College is the same junior college that produced Bobby Kielty, currently of the Minnesota Twins, who played for Ole Miss in 1998.
