OXFORD, Miss. - Holiday tournaments at Illinois-Chicago, Nassau, Bahamas and Florida International headline the Ole Miss women's basketball 2002-03 schedule. As in previous years, the Lady Rebels will play one of the most demanding schedules in the country. Ole Miss will play 13 teams that went to postseason play in 2002, including 12 NCAA Tournament teams.
"Again, our staff has put together a very strong non-conference schedule," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "It is a given that the SEC portion of our schedule will be tough, so adding some quality non-conference opponents makes our schedule very challenging."
The Lady Rebels will tip-off the 2002-03 season at home as they face Southern University in Tad Smith Coliseum on Nov. 25. Other non-conference home dates are Dec. 8, Lipscomb University; Dec. 14, Birmingham Southern; Dec. 16, Western Kentucky; Jan. 2, Temple; and Tennessee Tech, Jan. 28.
The Lady Rebels travel to Chicago for their road-opener. They will participate in the UIC Thanksgiving Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 1. They will also travel to Nassau, Bahamas Dec. 21-22 for the Sun Splash Shootout and to Miami for the Sun & Fun Classic Dec. 29-30.
In addition to the holiday tournaments, Ole Miss will play a non-conference road game at Arkansas-Little Rock on Dec. 3.
The Lady Rebels will open the Southeastern Conference portion of their schedule at home against Florida (Jan. 9) and then travel to play back-to-back road games at LSU (Jan. 12) and Georgia (Jan. 16). Ole Miss will host Mississippi State (Jan. 19) and Alabama (Jan. 26) and travel to Kentucky (Jan. 23) to close out their January SEC slate.
The Lady Rebels continue SEC play in February, hosting Auburn (Feb. 2), Vanderbilt (Feb. 13) and LSU (Feb. 20) and traveling to Tennessee (Feb. 6), Arkansas (Feb. 9), OLE Mississippi State (Feb. 23) and Florida (Feb. 27). The conclude the regular season by hosting South Carolina on March 2.
The SEC Tournament will be held March 6-9 at Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Ark.
"We tried to schedule some teams that will prepare us for our conference slate and also provide our fans some entertaining basketball," said Aldy. "Between our non-conference and SEC home games, some of the top teams in the country will be coming to Oxford."
