OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss baseball will hold a Red-Blue intra-squad scrimmage Saturday at 4:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, following the 11 a.m., home football game between Ole Miss and No. 6.
Admission to the scrimmage is free and fans are encouraged to come and catch a preview of the 2003 Rebels.
"We want to encourage all of our fans to come out and catch a preview of our 2003 squad," said third-year Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "With the football game at 11 a.m., we decided to start the scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. That way, fans can go back to The Grove following the football game, get something to eat, and then come out to the scrimmage. We're very excited about this year's squad and we're excited about Saturday's scrimmage. It caps what should be an outstanding day of Ole Miss sports; tailgating in The Grove, a home football game and then our Red-Blue baseball game."
Ole Miss returns seven position starters from last year's squad that finished 37-19, including sophomore Seth Smith, the 2002 SEC Freshman of the Year, and senior shortstop Chad Sterbens, who batted .376 and tied a school record with a 21-game hitting streak at the end of last season.
Sophomore right-hander Alan Horne is among the top pitchers returning for the Rebels, after going 5-2 with a 4.97 ERA last season and earning honorable mention Freshman All-America honors. Also back this season are junior right-hander Adam Yates and senior right-hander T.J. Beam. Yates was 1-1 with four saves and a 3.76 ERA last spring, while Beam was 2-2 with six saves and a 4.53 ERA. Beam turned down a professional contract offer from the Philadelphia Phillies to return for his senior season, after Philadelphia selected him in the 11th round during last June's Major League Baseball Draft.
The Rebels are currently in their third week of fall drills, which began on September 16 and will conclude October 13.
