FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Stacy Andrews recorded the lone first place finish for the Ole Miss track teams at the SEC West Challenge on Saturday. Andrews finished first in the weight throw with his toss of 62-3.25 to lead Ole Miss against fellow SEC West members LSU, Mississippi State and host Arkansas.
"Stacy spent all fall working with the football team," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "He has not had much time to train for track so for him to finish first in this meet was outstanding."
Sophomore Antwon Hicks started 2003 where he left off last season by finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 7.80. The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team also finished second, clocking in at 3:12.63. Other top three finishers on the men's side were senior James Shelton in the 60 meters (6.73), Brandon Atkinson in the triple jump (49-11.75) and Brett Canale in the weight throw (52-6.5).
Senior Willisa Heintz led the Lady Rebels with two second place finishes. Heintz placed second in the 60 meters (7.49) and the 200 meters (24.19). Sophomore Marquita Aldridge finished second in the long jump (18-9.75) and senior Amanda Harvey placed second in the weight throw (46-6.25) to pace Ole Miss.
"Willisa got off to a great start for the season with her two races today," said Walker. "She ran really well and we are expecting big things from her in 2003."
Freshman Rachel Ellison finished in third place in the 800 meters (2:!4.61), while sophomores Octavia Carter, Kesia Bass, LaToya McBride and Antisha Anderson all tied for third place in the high jump by clearing 5-4.25.
"Overall I was pleased with our performances today," said Walker. "We had some quality performances today and we also got to see some areas where we need to do some improving. This was a good meet to get a gauge on where we are in our training."
The Rebels and Lady Rebels will return to the track next Friday, January 24, when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Arkansas State Invitational.
