NORCROSS, Ga. - Senior Ole Miss men's tennis player Alex Hartman missed out on his bid to advance to the SEC Indoor Championships singles final for the third time in his career, losing to the eventual champion, Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt. Hartman reached the finals of this event in 2000, 2001 and the quarterfinals in 2002.
Hartman, the tournament's seventh seed dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Reynolds, seeded third and ranked No. 8 in the nation. Reynolds went on to defeat Florida's Jason Holmia for the title. The two are now 1-1 in two meetings, as Hartman won last year's only meeting, during the dual match at Vanderbilt.
Despite the loss, Hartman, ranked No. 24 in the country, had a successful run at the SEC Indoor, posting a huge win over the top-seed and last year's ITA Rookie-of-the-Year Jesse Witten, of Kentucky in the quarterfinals.
The SEC Indoor featured many of the nation's top players. The SEC is annually the toughest conference in the nation and 2003 continues the strong tradition, with four teams ranked in this year's preseason top 10 and nine in the top 25.
The Rebels showed the rest of the league that they are ready to defend their SEC Western Division title and contend for the overall crown again. Junior Paul Ciorascu reached the quarterfinals, before losing to Reynolds. Claes Lindholm was a point away from getting to the quarters as well against semifinalist Bo Hodge (Georgia).
Ole Miss opens the dual match season Jan. 27 against South Florida. That match will be played at the Gillom Sports Center at 2 p.m.
