SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Some of the region's top softball teams will be on display this weekend at the Ole Miss Softball Classic, presented by Southeastern Sports Management. The event runs all day Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. each day at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss.

Joining the host Rebels is Christian Brothers, Delta State, Mississippi Valley State, Northeast Mississippi Community College and Northwest Mississippi Community College.

"It should be some great competition," said Ole Miss head coach Candi Letts. "We have teams from a variety of levels. This will hopefully help build support for a lot of these local teams.

"For our team, our biggest goal is to get a lot of our young players used to playing with our veterans. This is a great opportunity to build team chemistry. We're really looking forward to playing someone than ourselves."

The host Rebels take momentum into the 2003-04 campaign, after a strong finish to the spring. Over the final month, Ole Miss posted SEC victories over No. 10 Georgia, No. 18 South Carolina and Tennessee and also took the season series from rival Mississippi State for the first time since 1999. The Rebels lose only one position starter from that club and return 12 of 18 letterwinners.

Mississippi Valley State is a force in the SWAC, finishing second in the Eastern Division a year ago with a 15-5 conference record, 26-20 overall. Delta State is coming off an outstanding 38-14 campaign and a third-place showing in the Gulf South Conference. Fellow GSC club Christian Brothers is rebounding from a 14-28 season.

Northeast is one of the premier juco softball programs in the country. The Tigers recorded a 32-17 mark last spring and claimed the Region XXIII championship and a ninth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. Region rival Northwest finished at .500 in its division a year ago with a 10-10 record and a 12-14 result overall.

Southeastern Sports Management hosts numerous youth athletic events in a variety of sports, including baseball, softball and soccer. SSM also features state-of-the-art playing facilities such as Greenbrook Park, which is the site of the 2003 Tennessee State High School Championships and the Dizzy Dean Fastpitch World Series.
